Old Jewish Street in Warsaw Preserved After WWII
Related to country: Poland

I love to walk from my home in the center of Warsaw to a small street hidden behind large modern buildings. The street's name is Prozna and it is one of the few in Warsaw which were saved from German bombings during the war. The climate is incredible there, the houses are really destroyed but you feel the weight of their history. The house where I live was built on the ruins of the Jewish ghetto and, since I come from Lublin,a town in eastern Poland with rich Jewish tradition and location of a Nazi concentration camp during WWII, I feel deeply moved by this fact.

Feminist March in Warsaw
Related to country: Poland

On Sunday, March 5 in Warsaw the annual 8th feminist march took place. I went with my boyfriend, parents and my group of peer sexual educators Ponton. There were about 2000 people and we walked along the main street of the city, escorted by police. The political climate in Poland is not favourable to feminist and pro-choice views because our president and government is very conservative and catholic. The manifestation was organized not only to stress that women demand equality in the workplace but it was also a sign of opposition against the current authorities who are against women's equality, homosexuality, contraception and abortion. There was a group of ultra-conservative youth who did not follow the manifestation but showed tv teams that they have soap to "wash away dirty thoughts." There was a special moving platform where children of manifestants could play and sing.

Valentine's Day Street Action in Warsaw

On 14th February, Valentine's Day, my group of youth educators organized a street action in the center of Warsaw. We wanted to increase HIV/AIDS awareness among young people. We managed to find a sponsor who gave us 700 condoms for distribution and the national prevention center gave us 300 more. Our plan was to involve passers-by in our action by giving them pink pieces of paper to write their slogans concerning the topic. We hung these slogans on the line behind us. People who wished received pink baloons from us on which they could also write. Our volunteers distributed leaflets and condoms and encouraged people to e-mail us if they shoud have personal questions. Quickly leaflets and consoms ran out as many people were interested. The funny thing was that next to us Polish group of far-right youth had their own action and they are not very friendly. They rejected our consoms saying they don't use them and shouted some nasty comments at us. Overall we managed to get some media attention - there was press, radio and television.
